CodeHouse Announces Partnerships with MLT, Jopwell, and Tallo to Prepare Rising HBCU Students for Careers in Tech

The partnerships will support the recently launched CodeHouse Scholars Initiative (CHSI)

ATLANTA — CodeHouse today announced partnerships with Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT), Jopwell, and Tallo to provide freshmen at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) majoring in tech-related fields with mentorship, professional development, and technical training. The partnerships are part of the CodeHouse Scholars Initiative (CHSI), announced in March, which aims to equip the newest cohort of students at the Atlanta University Center (AUC) with the tools they need to succeed in the tech industry as they matriculate.

“The first step towards eradicating racial and socioeconomic disparities in tech is by providing underrepresented students with comprehensive resources that amplify their existing talent,” said Dr. Avery Kenly, CodeHouse’s Director of Student Recruitment. “By teaming up with these innovative organizations that are promoting inclusive leadership pipelines, CodeHouse will be able to open up more doors for diverse talent while improving representation in the industry.”

To coincide with National College Decision Day on May 1, 2021, CodeHouse began notifying members of CHSI’s inaugural class that they had been selected to participate in the program in late April. Starting this July, Scholars will gain exclusive access to personalized mentorship from professionals currently working at leading tech companies and attend a virtual four-week, paid Summer Bridge Program before they embark on their first collegiate semester.

MLT, a national non-profit that’s helping high-achieving women and men from underrepresented communities secure high trajectory post-college jobs and leadership positions, will support CHSI from a number of angles, including providing both academic and professional mentorship to Scholars. They will additionally craft custom modules and host monthly workshops to bolster students’ career skills.

“MLT and CodeHouse share a mission to ensure more historically underrepresented Black, LatinX and Native American students are able to realize their full potential in the tech industry. Together, we will equip more of these talented students with the coaching, playbook, and accelerating network needed to launch game-changing careers,” said Rishal Stanciel, MLT’s Director of Fellow Recruitment & Senior Career Prep Coach. “We’re especially excited about this partnership because CodeHouse founders, Ernest Holmes and Tavis Thompson, are both alumni of MLT’s Career Prep program.”

Jopwell, a career advancement platform for underrepresented students and professionals also assists companies with their diversity recruitment, marketing, and retention efforts at scale. Jopwell will partner with Codehouse to focus on the Summer Bridge Program and directly transform our country’s leadership pipeline. Through weekly professional development workshops, Scholars will have the opportunity to strengthen their personal brand, gain confidence in public speaking, and fine tune their social media presence.

"We are thrilled to support CHSI by providing access to career development coaching and programming for their students this summer,” said Tani Brown, Jopwell’s Head of Community. “CodeHouse's mission aligns with Jopwell's vision of advancing careers for Black, Latinx, and Native American students and professionals and we're honored to work together in coalition to change the face of technical leadership.”

Tallo, an online platform designed to give the next generation of talent the ability to overcome traditional boundaries and connect with opportunities anytime, will support CHSI’s mission to provide participants with access to internships and full-time career placements. The Tallo app will also enable Scholars to showcase their skills and abilities in their online profile, network directly with companies, and match with more than $20 billion in scholarships.

"Tallo is excited to partner with CodeHouse, in an effort to create a more equitable space for students of color in technology and within all aspects of achievement,” said Casey Welch, Tallo’s CEO and Co-Founder.
