CodeHouse Commences Second Year of STEM Scholarship and Mentorship Program

Initiative provides students with technical training, mentorship, scholarships, and internship opportunities as they matriculate

July 11, 2022

ATLANTA – CodeHouse, the 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on tackling the diversity gap in the tech industry, today commenced the second year of the CodeHouse Scholars Initiative (CHSI). Through the program, 43 incoming HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) freshmen majoring in tech-related fields will receive up to $20,000 in academic scholarships, professional development, one-on-one mentorship, and more over the course of their collegiate careers.

“We’re proud of the strides we made during the CodeHouse Scholars Initiative’s inaugural year, and today marks another important step in our journey to improve diverse representation in the tech industry,” said Ernest Holmes, CodeHouse’s president and co-founder. “As we welcome the next generation of leaders into the CodeHouse fold, we’re confident that we’ll be able to amplify their talents through our various initiatives and the support of our partners as we look to make the world a better, more inclusive place.”

Founded in 2021, CHSI is a four-year program dedicated to preparing Black, Latinx, and Native American students for careers in STEM through technical training, scholarships, internship opportunities, and more. In its first year, CHSI’s inaugural cohort attended numerous networking events and workshops hosted by founding partner PayPal and other leading tech companies, securing more than 20 summer and fall internships along with other professional opportunities.

Last year, CodeHouse received a $1 Million Grant from Google.org to expand CHSI to include two additional HBCUs–Howard University and North Carolina A&T State University–and complement its already-established presence at Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. After being selected through a competitive application process, CHSI’s second cohort will embark on their CodeHouse journey with a four-week Summer Bridge Program to prime their professional and technical skills before the school year kicks off.

To celebrate the commencement of CHSI’s second year, CodeHouse hosted an Opening Ceremony at the Gathering Spot in Atlanta with its newest Scholars and their families, as well as special guest speakers such as Kim Jenkins, PayPal’s Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion, and Reggie McKnight, Google’s Global Head of Social Impact. During the event, CodeHouse also recognized and reaffirmed its appreciation for its committed industry and institutional partners.
